I’m late posting this week, because I’ve been busy revising my middle grade fantasy novel for an interested party. I hope someday to have news to share on that score. (Sorry to be cryptic.) In the meantime, I wanted to talk briefly about the gift of words before I return to revising.
Being able to tell a story, to use the right combination of words to entertain, encourage, or enlighten is a gift. Every once in a while I’m reminded of how valuable a timely word can be.
Ever have someone affirm you in a way that galvanized you to action? Perhaps you’d been stuck, and someone said just the right thing to get you moving. Perhaps what he or she said inspired to go beyond what you thought you could do. The gift of words.
Sometimes, you only need one word to lift your spirits or to bring about a positive change. There’s one in particular I’m thinking of: Yes. A balm for a soul bludgeoned by too many No’s. The gift of a word.
When has someone’s yes lifted your spirits? What recent story inspired you to go beyond the limitations you thought were the framework of your life? Feel free to share in the comments below. And have a great weekend while you’re at it!
Yes, ’tis the season for crochet projects. I found this mini mitten ornament pattern (designed by Rebecca Lynn Taylor) at Ravelry.
We’ve got snow! At least a little.

Nicely said and good luck with your revising. Hate to admit that I have trouble remembering the last time a ‘yes’ came my way. It’s weird, but it seems like people are more interested in saying ‘no’ these days. A bunch of my friends are in this position where they’re more likely to get criticized or denied than supported.
Hi, Charles! I know what you mean. Yeses come so infrequently. I also had trouble remembering the last time I heard yes prior to this. I wish that were not the case. People seem out for blood these days.
It does seem like destroying others is more in style than building them up. Not sure what caused the disturbing shift.
Sigh. What a sad turn of events. I wish people realized that some things (like ripping into someone) come back to haunt you. What goes around comes around.
All depends on a person’s level of empathy. Not a common thing in social media arenas.
Sad but true.
Over the years you’ve given me the right word or words at the perfect time…thank you for that, L. Marie. What a cute little mitten! Enjoy the snow!!☃️☃️☃️
Hi, Jill! Aww. I’m so glad to be part of your journey.
Most of the snow has melted already. I’m sure more will come.😀 😃 😄
I have to make more mittens, because I plan to send them to people. (Hint)
We can all use affirmation, and it’s a gift to be able to give it, too. Hope a YES to that novel comes your way soon!
Hi, Louise! I hope so too! Thanks for your good wishes. Hope you’re doing well!
Good luck with the revising . . . and I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you that you get a BIG FAT “YES!!!” from the interested party.
Hi! Thank you, Nancy! I’ll keep everyone posted. Have a good weekend!
I’m with Jill. YOU are one of the people who has given me encouragement over the years. You’ve helped me get back up when “no’s” have knocked me on my butt. I am praying for a BIG YES for you, my friend.
Hi, Laura! Thank you! 😃 😄 😁 Now if only I can finish this thing! I feel like going back to bed!
Good luck with your revision! And I second what Laura Sibson said. Praying for good news for you soon!
Hi, Lyn! Thank you! I’ll fill you in on what’s going on! Will message you.
You are such an encourager, my friend, in so many ways. Praying for your revision. And YES!
Hi, Sharon! Thank you! I so need it, especially today when I’m not feeling great. 😟
Oh, I hope you get a big Yes on the book! And that you feel better soon… 🙂
Thank you, FF, on both counts! 😊 Will keep you posted.
Yep, we had a dusting of snow yesterday. I hear we’re supposed to get more tonight.
The time the word “yes” made me happier than ever before, was when my husband finally said yes to moving back to our hometown. It took him two decades.
Good luck with revising. Have a great weekend, L.
Yes we did! When I drove home last night, the flakes were falling. And now we’re getting more! The kids will be happy at least.
I’m glad your husband finally said yes, Lori.
Hope you have a good weekend! 😀 😃 😄
Best thoughts and wishes for the revisions, L. Marie. YES!
Since you’ve posted we’ve had a second dusting – just enough to mean I need to get out and clear off the car. 🙂
LOVE the mitten ornament. Our decorations and good cheer are still in boxes where they may stay until later this week, but, our Ezra did a clever job of decorating a small tree we put in his room here over Thanksgiving.
Off I go, looking for a YES, or even a MAYBE.
Yes, the snow is falling even as I type this, Penny.
Hope you’ll hear a yes soon. 😀 😃 😄 (I’ve been hoping to see a blog post from you. But I understand seasonal busyness.)
Thank you! The mitten is so easy to make. Here is the link: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mini-mitten-ornament-4
Humming that chorus, I’m sure you know…’yeslordyeslordyesyeslord…’
He likes that word, too.
Hugs and hopes for your next ‘yes’.
🙂
Thanks, Laura! How very true. 😀 I will definitely let you know what happens! Hope you’re having a good weekend!
Words are definitely a gift! Just one or two can make all the difference.
Hi, Jennie! So true! Especially in a teaching environment with so many eager learners. 😀
Indeed!
😀
I hope the interested party will love your fantasy novel. Good luck.
My oldest daughter said something that galvanized me to action. I can’t remember the words she used, but she encouraged me to get my novel published.
In a more general sense, I appreciate the enrichment of my life from the words I read. I remember a moment from when I was a preteen. I read a sentence that described something I knew but had never put into words, and I was blown away by the ability of an author to do that.
Hi, Nicki! Thank you!
I’m glad you were encouraged to not only write, but write to publish. Though I am still hoping your illustrating work will net some encouragement too.
I’m also grateful for the inspiration of authors!
